Given the insanity and unwanted supernatural attention that The King In Yellow brings, suicide is not an unexpected response to encounters with The Yellow Mythos.
The Repairer of Reputations lays out a strong connection to suicide, featuring as it does suicide laws, the resulting lethal chambers, and the presumed suicide of Vance. Further, Louis Castaigne believes that the author of the Play shot himself, however Hildred believes he is still alive.
Characters who have committed suicide include:
- Vance (presumably)
- Boris Yvain (whose sculpture adorns the first lethal chamber)
- The niece of the narrator (and probably the narrator, too) in The Gift Returned.
It possible that Jeanne also committed suicide, said as she was to have "died in her youth for love of Philip, A Stranger".
