Story by H.P. Lovecraft.

The Plot[]

An unnamed narrator arrives in the New England town of Kingsport in search of the places where his ancestors lived. Instead, he is somehow taken back to the town in its early years and joins in a Yuletide festival in a cavern attended by loathsome creatures as it is revealed that his family were cultists.

Cthulhu Mythos Connections[]

Although it lacks any overt statement as to the nature of the cult, The Festival fits neatly into the Cthulhu Mythos as it appears to represent cultists of Nyarlathotep given the cavern-setting and amorphous piper and the protagonist consults the Necronomicon in an attempt to make sense of his experience.

Yellow Mythos Connections[]

The story has, however, been linked to the Yellow Mythos, largely due to the parallel drawn between the riding beasts in this story and the Byakhee of August Derleth. In addition, although the story lacks a direct mention of anything to do with the Mythos, there are a couple of hints of a link, namely the mention of Aldebaran and the fact that one of the cultists is wearing a wax mask that has overtones of the Pallid Mask.

The Cult[]

The cult appears to worship Nyarlathotep, although this is not overtly stated. Membership includes undead, but decayed cultists. In The Call of Cthulhu game, the cult is presented in more detail in the Kingsport - City In The Mists sourcebook.
